Overview:

At the University of Huddersfield, a major lighting upgrade was undertaken within the main sports hall facility. The project involved replacing the existing high-level lighting system mounted at 10 metres with new, energy-efficient LED luminaires manufactured by Hacel.

In addition to upgrading the light fittings, the project required the complete replacement of the existing dimming controls with a modern DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) control system. The objective was to enhance lighting performance, improve energy efficiency, and provide greater flexibility and control for different sporting and event requirements.

The Challenge:

The primary challenge was the working height. The existing luminaires were installed at approximately 10 metres above floor level, requiring specialist access equipment and strict adherence to health and safety procedures.

To safely reach the fittings, a tracked electric scissor lift was used. This presented a unique logistical difficulty: access to the sports hall required transporting the lift through a live university building. The university remained fully operational throughout the project, meaning pedestrian traffic, staff, and students had to be carefully managed at all times.

The Solution:

A detailed project plan was developed in collaboration with university facilities management. Specific time windows were agreed to allow safe movement of the tracked electric scissor lift through the building, reducing disruption during peak footfall hours. Protective floor coverings and banksmen were used to safeguard both the building interior and members of the public while relocating equipment.

Once in position, the existing luminaires were systematically removed and replaced with new DALI-compatible LED fittings supplied by Hacel. The new system was integrated with a fully upgraded DALI control solution, enabling: Zoned lighting control, Scene setting for different sports/events and improved dimming performance.

Outcomes:

The completed installation delivered a significant improvement in lighting quality, efficiency, and control flexibility within the sports hall. The new LED luminaires provide brighter, more uniform illumination while reducing energy consumption and ongoing maintenance costs.

The implementation of the DALI control system allows university staff to tailor lighting levels to suit various sporting activities, training sessions, examinations, and events hosted within the hall.

Despite the logistical challenges of operating within a live university environment and working at 10 metres high, the project was delivered safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption. The result is a modern, future-proof lighting system that supports both performance and sustainability objectives at the University of Huddersfield.

Professional Services Hub – University of York

Professional Services Hub 3

Overview:

The University of York appointed Genco Electrical Projects to carry out a full electrical fit out of their Professional Services Hub 3 building on Innovation Close. Working alongside Lodestone Projects to deliver a complete refurbishment.

The Challenge:

Our team was tasked with delivering a full range of electrical services across the building, designed to meet the University’s high standards for safety, functionality and efficiency.

As this building was vacant prior to the install, we had strip out the majority of pre-existing inefficient lighting and power.

The Solution:

Installing a smart Casambi lighting system which enables easy reconfiguration of lighting zones and energy-efficient operation across the building.

Fire alarms, emergency lighting, CCTV, door entry and disabled refuge systems were all installed to the University’s specifications, ensuring maximum safety and compliance.

Outcomes:

The Professional Services Hub 3 now provides staff and students alike with a modern, safe and flexible workspace across multiple University departments.

Our electrical systems support energy efficiency, staff safety and operational flexibility.

LAW Civil Engineering – University of Huddersfield

Overview:

We were tasked with the redevelopment of the university’s civil engineering department. The project involved installing distribution, containment, power, lighting, structured cabling, fire alarm and door access throughout.

This project also required an existing 3-phase distribution area which was to be decommissioned, and outgoing services re-routed to the new proposed location.

The Challenge:

The main challenge was the relatively short lead time into the construction stage from the stage 3 design.

This project required detailed analysis to understand the existing capacity, the proposed demand, and identifying a replacement, whilst limiting disruption to areas outside the work.

The Solution:

The project required out-of-hours working and full team coordination to ensure all existing areas were functional during the construction period.

Genco conducted intrusive surveys to establish areas of concern for power outages. New sub-main containment and cabling routing was agreed to minimise disruption.

Outcomes:

We received very positive feedback from each stakeholder, including a visit from the NICEIC inspector who complimented us on a high-level, quality installation.

Innomotics – Contract Services

Overview:

Working alongside the principal contractor – Contract Services. We were commissioned to deliver a full electrical fit-out for Innomotics, a leading manufacturer of large industrial motors.

The project, at their commercial and industrial facility in Cheadle, required a robust, high-performance electrical solution to support manufacturing, assemble and office areas.

The Challenge:

We were challenged with designing a fully functioning electrical installation throughout the building.

Due to the height of the building, we were able to utilise a high-level containment run which would allow us to create an immaculate finish.

This project included the design and install of safety systems, data infrastructure, sub-mains distribution and security & access. Additionally, we had to deliver a high-performance LED lighting system.

The Solution:

We choose to install high performance lighting. Providing Innomotics with bright, energy-efficient illumination throughout production and workspace areas.

We installed a comprehensive fire alarm and emergency lighting package to meet regulatory standards and ensure workplace safety.

We integrated the door entry systems and CCTV coverage to secure the facility and protect staff and assets.

Outcomes:

The completed installation provides Innomotics with a safe, energy-efficient, and fully connected industrial facility. From production areas to offices, our electrical systems ensure reliable power, optimal lighting, and comprehensive safety and security measures.

This future-proof installation supports the company’s high-performance manufacturing operations and creates a modern, productive environment for staff.

Millwright Bristol – Lodestone Projects

Millwright Bristol Lodestone Projects

Overview:

Millwrights Place was a fit-out project within a new built 14 storey building comprising of 231 apartments. We were working for regular clients, Lodestone Projects, who oversaw the fit out works.

Our scope of works was to install the small power and lighting, mechanical supplies, fire alarm, access control, data, and panic alarm system.

The Challenge:

We were met with several challenges on this project, such as ongoing works preventing us from penetrating any walls into other areas outside of the scope of works. This would hinder us as we were to connect all power, lighting and data to existing distribution and cabs situated out of the areas we were working in.

Furthermore, the lighting design provided for the gym, wouldn’t work due to the lack of depth in the chosen light fittings. In addition to this, the small power and lighting scheme on the level 14 roof top wouldn’t work as it showed floor boxes going into concrete flags and recessed wall/brick lights mounted into the rendered upstand.

The Solution:

For the first challenge we suggested mounting our own distribution board within the ground floor amenity area so we could continue with wiring power, lighting and data. We would then take a main feed from each panel outside of the permitted area.

After recalculating the lighting design, we suggested using a light style that we’d used on a previous project, that would give a broader depth of coverage. Once we could precure these lights within the program time frame, we were given a variation to proceed.

As for the works on level 14, we suggested mounting a perimeter of galvanised trunking.

Outcomes:

After overcoming several obstacles, design changes and delays with other trades, we managed to get PC, and the client was very happy with the product. Genco went above and beyond on this project from site staff to office management as we do on all projects.

Overview:

Genco Electrical Projects were tasked with finding an energy efficient solution to the lighting installation as part of a large-scale refurbishment project on the Student Central Building at the University of Huddersfield.

Our long-term working relationship with the University, allowed us to understand the scope of this project, with efficiency, cost and timescale all important factors.

The Challenge:

Genco were tasked with sourcing the most cost effective and user friendly equipment for the University.

The lighting needed to be energy efficient with the ability to change colour and the small power needed to be mounted from the ceilings for the use of projectors.

Organisation was also key as other work men would be carrying out jobs on the refurb so Genco’s schedule needed to be perfectly planned.

The Solution:

We utilised Hacel Lighting on this project, opting for high spec, energy efficient options, that met both the job specifications and an eye-catching finish.

We opted for a motion detection programmed that reduced the lighting levels when a space was vacant.

As for the small power, we used rigid ceiling pendants, that allowed the cables to be hidden to the eye whilst still giving the user full functionality.

Outcomes:

The final outcome was a fully operational and visually integrated reception area, designed to meet all user requirements while maintaining simplicity and efficiency in daily operation.

Tannoy System – Guenther Bakeries

Overview:

Guenther Bakeries UK Ltd., a division of San Antonio-based C.H. Guenther & Son, are a large scale food manufacturer with several sites around the UK. Specialising in fresh and frozen bread, rolls, cakes, pies and other perishable baked foods, they work with major fast food companies such as McDonalds.

We were tasked with installing the cable to the new public address system at the Heywood facility.

The Challenge:

The tannoy and microphone system was to be installed throughout production, the warehouse and the offices. We had to second fix the wiring to the field locations around the site.

Working for such a large client, within the food production environment adds to the challenge. The factory is operational around the clock, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. With occasional production downtime for 8hrs on a Saturday.

This made managing the logistics crucial in order to complete the project on time.

The Solution:

During the week, whilst the factory was operational, we would cable as close to the working production lines as possible, being careful to not cause any disruption to the production process.

Once we were in a suitable position, we liaised with the production management, to arrange access on Saturdays.

We aimed to utilise the downtime on Saturdays when the majority of production was closed. This enabled us to work above the lines without the worry of contaminating the produce.

The Outcome:

Together with PAS Sound Engineering, we produced a fully functioning public address system with operational coverage around the whole premises, allowing the management to portray announcements throughout the building.

The Queens Hotel – Save Money Cut Carbon

The Queens Hotel

Overview:

The Queens Hotel is a large hotel located on City Square in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. Built in 1937, it is an elegant Art Deco Grade II listed building.

We carried out this project working for Save Money Cut Carbon, who help businesses take practical steps to be more sustainable, cutting energy & water bills, resulting in reduced carbon emissions. We were tasked with providing an external lighting solution.

The Challenge:

We were challenged to provide an energy efficient solution to the front façade of the building, that was in keeping with the rest of the hotel.

Being that the hotel is a listed building, we wanted to reduce the visual appearances of any cabling and LED strip lighting.

The project, undertaken during the covid pandemic, had many logistical challenges including road closures, overnight working and aligning work alongside other trades, meaning the project had specific time constraints.

The Solution:

We decided to utilise the Casambi enabled technology to produce a state of the art, wireless system that offered the required lighting output.

We installed, updated and commissioned the system through, having set up the scenes and groups through the Casambi smart device application. This gives the hotel and us here at Genco, the ability to control the output of the lighting remotely via the Casambi Gateway.

We created our own bracketry to house the LED strip lighting covertly within the existing building structure.

The Outcome:

The Queens hotel has a fully functioning, wirelessly controlled system that can be manipulated remotely via an app. This system, alongside the rest of the work carried out by Save Money Cut Carbon, makes the building more energy efficient and reduces their carbon impact.

It was completed on time, to budget and snag free, impressing both the hotel management and the client, Save Money Cut Carbon.

This project can be seen by the millions of visitors Leeds has throughout the year.

York Against Cancer – Lodestone Projects

Overview:

Working in conjunction with the main contractor, Lodestone Projects in order to deliver this project for the end customer; York Against Cancer.

Located at the York Community Stadium in Huntington, York Against Cancer’s mission is to make a difference to everybody affected by cancer. The Centre will offer a wide range of holistic cancer support services.

The Challenge:

The challenge of this project was to transform an empty retail unit into a fully functioning cancer treatment facility.

The facility has to be warm and welcoming for those visiting the centre, so the choice of lighting installation was important.

This project required a full Category B fit out in disciplines such as distribution, small power, fire alarm and Cat6 cabling.

The Solution:

We worked hard to complete the project within the allotted 12 week programme, in order to hand over the job to the end customer.

We utilised energy efficient, smart lighting and intelligent switching in order to future proof the installation and provide mood lighting for those visiting the centre.

Outcomes:

We delivered the project on time, to budget and snag free. The end customer was very pleased with the final result, as were our direct client; Lodestone Projects.
