Overview

The Mount Junior and Infant School’s lighting system was in need of a major overhaul. This would be a significant project aimed at improving user control, energy efficiency and the overall working environment.

On this project, both Genco Tech and Genco Projects collaborated to create a bespoke solution.

The Challenge:

Our aim was to create a better working environment for the children and the teachers whilst in class. We wanted to deliver a solution that was energy efficient and will lead to financial savings for the school. This lighting design needed to be flexible for any future additions or changes.

There were several challenges when looking to undertake work at the Mount Infant and Junior School due to the building’s design and the presence of asbestos in certain areas.

The project involved replacing lighting inn 34 rooms, totalling 259 devices.

The Solution

The new system we installed utilised the casambi control system, which allows for wireless control and commissioning. The system is controlled by wireless wall switches, as well as presence and absence sensors.

Each luminaire was pre-wired with a plug and cable ready to be connected to the Genco connect system. A unique numbering system was developed to pre-commission casambi devices before installation. Each device has a specific identification label indicating its location by floor, room and device.

Pre-commissioning was done in the Genco Tech factory, ensuring efficient installation on-site with zero commissioning cost.

The Outcome

The Genco Marshalling Box System, in conjunction with the Casambi Dimming System, resulted in significant cost savings for the client. By streamlining installation processes and minimizing on-site labour, the project became more cost-effective.

The use of wireless switches was a strategic decision, especially considering the presence of asbestos in the building. Since wireless switches eliminate the need for physical rewiring, the existing structure remains unchanged, ensuring safety and compliance.

The prewired and pre-commissioned lighting system, combined with the marshalling boxes, played a crucial role. Devices were prepared off-site, labelled, and tested before installation. This approach minimised time on site, reduced errors, and facilitated smoother hardware installation.

On-site installation was simplified by connecting each luminaire to the Genco Connect marshalling box system, dramatically reducing the installation time.

In summary, the integrated system not only addressed technical challenges but also delivered practical benefits, including cost-effectiveness, safety, and efficient deployment.

Reducing Single Use Plastics – Genco HQ

Single use plastics, be gone!
Genco HQ

Overview:

As with our Solar Panel install at HQ, we’ve decided to remove all single use plastics (where possible) from our production operation, as part of our pledge to reduce our carbon footprint. This commitment is part of a whole host of improvements we’ve made recently, to continually reduce our impact, as set out in our annual sustainability plan.

The Challenge:

The main challenge with this commitment is finding the best eco-friendly alternative, whilst maintaining our high-quality service.

We were on the lookout for a solution that allowed us to still safely pack and ship our delicate custom-made products, ensuring they arrive with the customer in perfect condition.

The Solution:

As a solution we decided to make a swap to Eco-friendly packaging tape, that only utilises biodegradable plastics.

We also redesigned our flatpack box assemblies to be smaller, therefore having less air space to negate the need for infilling with plastic bubble wrap. Given the re-design, it also allows us to ship more products together, meaning pallet space is more productive.

Packaging tape, labels and packing slips have also been changed to state ‘free from plastic’ and ‘100% recyclable’ to promote and encourage others to make the switch.

Outcomes:

This internal improvement project has been a raging success. Products are arriving with customers in complete, as intended condition, and the change has been well received.

Several customers have expressed an interest in making the same operational changes to reduce their own single use plastics and have reached out to us for advice on how to do so.

EnOcean Switch – Genco HQ

Overview:

In order to carry on with our sustainability approach, we wanted to look at reducing energy consumption within the office here at Genco.

Currently, the lights are on full time 08.00 – 17.00pm Monday – Friday at 100% power throughout the building resulting in high output and unnecessary energy use.

The Challenge:

We wanted to ensure the business remain operational with no disturbance when adding in the new lighting as well as reduce energy consumption.

Other factors presenting challenges were finding the cheapest energy efficient solution.

We wanted to find a solution that was user friendly, so all within the office could make any adjustments where required.

The Solution:

Genco Tech came up with the solution utilising casambi enabled technology to reduce to the output on lighting from 100% to 30% in the office.

We set up a timer using the Casambi app, lowering the output to the desired level, that dims at 5pm when the business day finishes.

We then also installed a self-powered wireless EnOcean Bluetooth switch that allows the user to customize and alter the settings at any time.

Outcomes:

After looking at different options, we decided to fit a self-powered wireless EnOcean Bluetooth switch for its low energy usage. It also eliminated the need for noisy and messy wiring installations, to limit the disruption to the business. The EnOcean switch simply sticks to the wall.

As well as hitting the challenge to reduce energy and cost saving, the Casambi app includes a safety feature “Overnight mode”, which allows the user to set timers for individual lights to come on/off throughout the night, giving the impression that the building is occupied, adding to the security of the building.

Casambi Lightbox – Genco HQ

Casambi Lightbox Panels
Genco HQ

Overview:

Casambi Technology plays a large part in what we do here at Genco Tech.

Casambi is a completely wireless system, in which luminaires and other devices communicate directly with each other via Bluetooth (Low Energy Technology).

The Challenge:

The challenge was on to find a way to represent a real world Casambi network, within a compact, workable space.

Once we settled on the panel design, we wanted to create something that showcases the wireless technology and assists with Casambi scene setting training.

The solution had to look great and in keeping with the rest of the building.

The Solution:

Using stand alone dynamic white lamps, with Casambi evolution protocol and colour-changing LED tape we created 3 panels. Each panel represents a network that can be subdivided into rooms.

They allow any Casambi scenario to be tested, from scenes, animations and groups to network setup. The three panels then represent a site that can be controlled via a gateway from anywhere in the world.

Outcomes:

We created three visually pleasing panels, containing 16 individual lamps, that showcases all that’s great about the Casambi Technology.

They’re a fantastic training tool and often a talking point for all those visiting Genco HQ.
