University of Huddersfield
Overview:
At the University of Huddersfield, a major lighting upgrade was undertaken within the main sports hall facility. The project involved replacing the existing high-level lighting system mounted at 10 metres with new, energy-efficient LED luminaires manufactured by Hacel.
In addition to upgrading the light fittings, the project required the complete replacement of the existing dimming controls with a modern DALI (Digital Addressable Lighting Interface) control system. The objective was to enhance lighting performance, improve energy efficiency, and provide greater flexibility and control for different sporting and event requirements.
The Challenge:
The primary challenge was the working height. The existing luminaires were installed at approximately 10 metres above floor level, requiring specialist access equipment and strict adherence to health and safety procedures.
To safely reach the fittings, a tracked electric scissor lift was used. This presented a unique logistical difficulty: access to the sports hall required transporting the lift through a live university building. The university remained fully operational throughout the project, meaning pedestrian traffic, staff, and students had to be carefully managed at all times.
The Solution:
A detailed project plan was developed in collaboration with university facilities management. Specific time windows were agreed to allow safe movement of the tracked electric scissor lift through the building, reducing disruption during peak footfall hours. Protective floor coverings and banksmen were used to safeguard both the building interior and members of the public while relocating equipment.
Once in position, the existing luminaires were systematically removed and replaced with new DALI-compatible LED fittings supplied by Hacel. The new system was integrated with a fully upgraded DALI control solution, enabling: Zoned lighting control, Scene setting for different sports/events and improved dimming performance.
Outcomes:
The completed installation delivered a significant improvement in lighting quality, efficiency, and control flexibility within the sports hall. The new LED luminaires provide brighter, more uniform illumination while reducing energy consumption and ongoing maintenance costs.
The implementation of the DALI control system allows university staff to tailor lighting levels to suit various sporting activities, training sessions, examinations, and events hosted within the hall.
Despite the logistical challenges of operating within a live university environment and working at 10 metres high, the project was delivered safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption. The result is a modern, future-proof lighting system that supports both performance and sustainability objectives at the University of Huddersfield.
